Ph.D. West Virginia University
B.S. Fairmont State College
Biography
I grew up in the rural town of Hambleton, West Virginia with a population of less than three hundred people. After graduating from high school, I went to Fairmont State College where I earned my B.S. in chemistry. My graduate work was performed at West Virginia University (GO MOUNTAINEERS!) in the area of organic chemistry. I started my postdoctoral work at Mississippi State University and later moved back to WVU to continue my postdoctoral studies in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. My first full-time teaching job was at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I came to Dalton State College in August 2005, where I currently teach general chemistry, organic chemistry, survey of chemistry, biochemistry, and advanced organic spectroscopy.
I also supervise undergraduate research. My research interests include the use of organometallic complexes in organic synthesis, the synthesis of biologically active compounds, and the production of biofuels. My current research students are working on a new synthetic method to prepare indoles. Indoles, both naturally occurring and synthetically created, have a wide range of biological activity making them of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry.
